Travellers

An update on the situation regarding the travellers moving onto land on the approach to Cropton.

The travellers purchased this land a few years ago (not from the council as has been suggested by some).
They arrived a couple of weeks ago and as soon as they started developing the site, North Yorkshire Council were advised. The contact at NYC delivered a stop notice to the travallers on Friday 26th July prohibiting any further work at the site. The site was vacated on Saturday 27th July.
The stop notice is valid for 56 days during which time a temporary injunction will be issued while a permanent injunction is prepared.
The water company have also been advised as they have covenant on the land to prevent any building or occupation, even temporary.
Northern Power Grid have also been advised.

The council will continue to liaise with the relevant people and will do everything possible to ensure that this unwelcome development is stopped.

It has been suggested that if the opportunity should arise then an offer to buy the land from the travellers should be made. This could be by subscription from residents or by the council raising a loan (which of course would need to be repaid out of council tax precept). No approach will be made without due process.
